The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
